A recap of high-profile off-screen romances in Bollywood, some of which stood the test of time while others faded away
Dilip Kumar -- Madhubala
Dilip Kumar and Madhubala met on the sets of Jwar Bhata (1944) and got separated later. According to some reports, Madhubala's father was to blame for their separation.
On the other side, the actress' family claims Dilip was to be blamed. BR Chopra filed a case against her father Ataullah Khan as the former wanted to shoot Naya Daur in Gwalior and her father refused it.
Madhubala supported her father and Dilip gave statement against her in the court. Madhubala wanted him to apologise to her father and he did not agree resulting into their split. The actress went on to marry the maverick genius Kishore Kumar.
Guru Dutt - Waheeda Rehman
Guru Dutt and Waheena met each other in Hyderabad when he was looking for a fresh face for his film. While working with her in Pyaasa, he found out that he has fallen in love with her.
Accroding to reports, Guru Dutt never wanted to leave his wife Geeta Dutt and wanted both the ladies in his life! Soon Geeta realised the reason behind her husband's miserable condition and decided to walk out of the marriage.
Kamaal Amrohi - Meena Kumari
Meena Kumari lost her heart to writer-director Kamaal Amrohi. And the couple chose a route of quick marriage and were happily married. In 1964, they started having frequent arguments and ultimately divorced.
Dharmendra was said to be the reason behind this. Eventually Dharmendra moved away from her and Meena is reported to have turned to alcohol.
Dev Anand-Suraiya
In his autobiography Dev Anand narrated his love story and confessed that how Suraiya's family never liked him.
He also revealed how he presented an engagement ring to her and was so desperate to marry her. In the end, Suraiya could not take a stand against her family and Anand got married to his co-star Kalpana Karthik.
Nargis-Raj Kapoor
Nargis was said to be involved with Raj Kapoor for many years before marrying Sunil Dutt. It is said that Raj Kapoor has dedicated the logo of his banner RK to her which is actually a rain-drenched still from Shree 420. But since Raj was already married, he had to let go off Nargis.
Amitabh Bachchan - Rekha
Amitabh married his co-star Jaya Bhaduri in 1973. But this marriage didn't stop the rumours surrounding him and Rekha.
To add masala to the plot, even Yash Chopra's Silsila was said to be depiction of their real-life love story. Although the two stars never admitted to the relationship.
Shatrughan Sinha - Reena Roy
Shatrughan and Reena's reel life romance soon became real as they were said to be in love with each other for several years. They made a lovely couple.
Shatru was married to the then beauty pageant winner Ms Poonam while Reena apparently wanted commitment. As it turned out, Reena had no choice but to part ways with the man she loved.
Mahesh Bhatt - Parveen Babi
Mahesh Bhatt made two films on his relationships with Parveen. One is Arth back in 1982 and then after her demise, he made Woh Lamhe in 2006.
In his autobiography, the former director also claimed that it was because of Babi's illness and mental status that his love story would never come to a fruition.
Akshay Kumar - Raveena Tondon
There were strong rumours about Akshay and Raveena's secret marriage in the early '90s. Later it was said that Kumar started seeing Shilpa Shetty and asked Raveena for legal separation.
None of the parties involved ever corroborated the buzz. But what is known to the world is Akshay getting hitched to Twinkle and Raveena leading a happy married life on her own.
Salman Khan-Aishwarya Rai
This love story deserves a movie, if not a novel. Salman and Ash hit off during Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). Sallu admitted that he was not faithful to her.
There were rumours of phyical assaults as well and later landed at her place and broke things around at her apartment.
Aishwarya's parents took their daughter's case seriously and lodged a complaint against Salman. Ash is married to Abhishek Bachchan with a daughter in hand while Sallu remains the nation's most eligible bachelor.
